(ECNS) -- Peking University said Monday that renowned mathematician Wei Dongyi is in good health, addressing concerns sparked by a recent video showing him with missing teeth as he launched his new social media account.

In a statement published on Monday, the university said Wei has been experiencing significant periodontal issues. “Over the past three years, he has undergone annual health check-ups organized by the university, with doctors advising him to pay special attention to his oral health, while all other examination results remain normal,” it said.

Peking University expressed gratitude for public concern regarding Wei and stated it fully respects his personal wishes and lifestyle, The university has made comprehensive arrangements for his work, living conditions, and healthcare.

An official from Peking University's School of Mathematical Sciences and its affiliated Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research on Monday called on the public to create a quiet academic environment for Wei’s research. “We sincerely hope all sectors of society can join us in creating a supportive atmosphere for young scholars to pursue their research undisturbed,” the official said.

In a brief clip posted four days ago on Douyin, China’s popular short-video platform, the 33-year-old scholar stands in front of a blackboard in a striped shirt and simply says, "Hello everyone, I'm Wei Dongyi. This is my account."
