The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday slammed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison's baseless remarks about Australian citizen Yang Jun, who was arrested on suspicion of espionage.
"I repeatedly stated China's position regarding this case most recently," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said, adding that the words from the Australian side "are simply fact-distorting and self-contradictory."
Geng's statement came after Morrison said that Australia would advocate for Yang's release.
In response, the spokesperson reiterated that China is a country with rule of law and the national security organ will handle the case in accordance with the law.
"Once again I advise the Australian side to stop making irresponsible comments, and instead, contribute to mutual trust and friendship between the countries," he said.
