China and the United States will further leverage the China-U.S. trade consultation mechanism to maintain communication and dialogue, enhance consensus and reduce misunderstandings, as well as strengthen cooperation, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.
When asked about the key topics discussed at the first meeting of the China-U.S. trade consultation mechanism – and whether China raised demands regarding U.S. high-tech restrictions – ministry spokesperson He Yadong said the two sides had reached a principled agreement. This included implementing the important consensus reached by the two heads of state during their June 5 phone call, as well as the framework of measures to consolidate outcomes of economic and trade talks in Geneva. He noted that new progress was made in addressing each side's economic and trade concerns.
In responding to the question on how many rare earths export licenses China plans to approve this week, He stated that as a responsible major country, China fully considers the reasonable demands and concerns of other countries in civilian applications.
China has approved a number of export license applications related to rare earths and will continue to strengthen the review process for compliant applications, the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.
He added that China reviews export license applications for rare earth-related items in accordance with laws and regulations, has already approved a certain number of compliant applications, and will continue to strengthen the approval process for eligible cases.
