Crackdown on Huawei won't make U.S. more secure, stronger, company says

Restricting Huawei from doing business in the U.S. will not make the U.S. more secure or stronger; instead, this will only leave the U.S. lagging behind in 5G deployment, and unreasonable restrictions will infringe upon the company's rights and raise other serious legal issues, Huawei told the Global Times Thursday in response to the U.S. ban on its products.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Wednesday that bars U.S. companies from using products made by Huawei and other Chinese telecoms companies.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce announced Wednesday that it will add Huawei and its affiliates to its entity list, which will also restrict Huawei in importing U.S. technology.

"Huawei is the unparalleled leader in 5G. We are ready and willing to engage with the U.S. government and come up with effective measures to ensure product security," a Huawei spokesperson said.

Washington has been targeting the Chinese telecom equipment provider for months, citing security reasons, and U.S. officials also lobbied to urge other countries to drop Huawei's products.

The U.S. is abusing the power of its government and deliberately discrediting and suppressing specific companies, which proves neither glory nor justice, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Wednesday when commenting on the matter.

"We urge the U.S. side to stop cracking down on Chinese companies by using security excuses and to provide a fair and unprejudiced business environment," Geng Shuang, spokesperson of the ministry, told a press briefing on Wednesday.

Analysts consider this move astonishing, which risks decoupling China and the U.S. in the high-tech sector.

"The BIS's order, once it takes effect, will give the U.S. government much more room to limit U.S. firms supplying Huawei, and this is the Trump administration's new move in exerting extreme pressure on trade negotiations," Fang Xingdong, founder of Beijing-based technology think tank ChinaLabs, told the Global Times on Thursday.

The order is also in line with the U.S. government's meticulous plan in cracking down on Chinese tech giants, he noted.

From chipsets to operating systems to servers, Huawei has been widely investing lately in core technologies which helps strengthen its competitiveness, which is likely to lower the risk that it will face obstacles if the U.S. blocks technology exports。
