(ECNS) -- Xu Jinlin, a craftsman in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, has created handmade books for years. His craft has brought traditional paper books alive.
Some of his handmade books adopt a 3D effect of light and shadow, while some can be torn page by page.
A handmade 3D book themed on Dunhuang Grottoes has won a world-level gold prize for bookbinding.
The book, costing Xu three years, features 68 Dunhuang-themed cards, which can be flexibly chosen as the cover of the book at will.
It also includes woodcuts readers could turn into mini Dunhuang murals.
Xu believes his work instills a touch of modernity to traditional Chinese culture.
Unlike paper books sold in typical book stores, his books allow readers to get involved in the reading process, Xu said, adding that he hopes to attract more young people to read.
Xu has also created books based on Chinese folk arts like shadow play.
His handmade book telling shadow play stories "performs" for readers with the help of a flashlight.
Engaged in book design for more than 30 years, Xu has won many crucial prizes, attracting lots of foreigners to learn from him.
The craftsman will focus on other Gansu cultural elements like Jiayuguan Pass and Lanzhou Beef Noodle Soup and accept foreign students, hoping to make more creative handmade books inspired by the collision of thoughts.
