U.S. actions on Winter Olympics aim to tarnish Beijing's image: scholar

Washington's announcement of not sending any diplomatic or official representation to the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics has a core purpose of damaging Beijing's image, said Guo Bingyun, an associate professor at China's Sichuan International Studies University.

In an article published Friday by Singapore's Chinese-language paper Lianhe Zaobao, the scholar pointed out that the United States, in defiance of over 30 years of international practice, has led a group of allies to oppose the Olympic truce resolution, among others.

Academic circles regard the Biden administration's so-called "competitive coexistence" with China as competition by all means except war, so the Winter Olympics, to which China attaches great importance, naturally became a U.S. target, Guo said.
