The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway (HSR) in Indonesia has transported a total of 10 million passengers since its formal operation started on October 17, 2023, according to China State Railway Group Co on Thursday, marking a milestone for the landmark China-Indonesia cooperation project.
As of June 25, 2025, a total of 29,778 passenger train runs had been executed, carrying more than 10 million passengers, and bullet trains on the HSR have safely covered more than 4.63 million kilometers (km), according to the company, noting that operations have remained safe and orderly.
The milestone marks fresh progress for the HSR, which has a top speed of 350 km per hour and shortens the travel time between the two cities to 46 minutes from more than three hours. It's a flagship project under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
In October 2024, the Jakarta-Bandung HSR celebrated its first year of operation. At that time, it had facilitated 5.79 million passenger trips, with continuously strong growth in passenger flow, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
To meet growing demand, the number of daily high-speed trains on the HSR has increased from 14 in the early days of operation to 62 at present, while the number of passenger seats offered each day has increased from more than 8,400 to more than 37,000.
The maximum daily passenger volume has reached 25,000, and the peak passenger occupancy rate on a single train reached as high as 99.64 percent, according to the statement from China State Railway Group Co.
The impressive data of the Jakarta-Bandung HSR came as a number of Chinese-constructed connectivity projects under the BRI also make fresh progresses.
The China-Laos Railway, which has become a vital transport link since its opening on December 3, 2021, has transported 53 million passengers and 60 million tons of cargo as of end-May, according to China News Service on Tuesday.
On May 30, the East Coast Rail Link, a mega rail project in Malaysia being built by the China Communications Construction Co, marked another milestone with the installation of its first communication, information and signaling systems at the Kota SAS Station in Pahang state, Xinhua report noted.
Meanwhile, China's investment along the BRI continues to rise. During the January-May period, non-financial outbound direct investment in countries participating in the BRI reached $15.52 billion, up 20.8 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday.
