(ECNS) -- The attack that injured two Japanese citizens and one Chinese in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province on Monday was an isolated incident, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday.
The police in Suzhou said in a statement on Tuesday that the knife attack took place on Monday afternoon, and the suspect was a 52-year-old unemployed man who was apprehended on the spot by police officers.
According to Mao, the two Japanese nationals and one Chinese national were immediately taken to hospital and given timely treatment. The injuries of the two Japanese nationals are non-life threatening. The wounded Chinese national is still being rescued at the hospital. The case is under further investigation.
Mao said it was a regrettable incident. According to preliminary?police assessment, this was an isolated incident.
"Such isolated incidents could happen in any country in the world. China will continue to take effective measures to protect the safety of all foreign nationals in China like protecting our own citizens," Mao added.
