Located in the city of Dunhuang, Gansu Province, the Mogao Grottoes comprises the largest, most richly endowed treasure house of Buddhist art in the world. It was first constructed in 366 and represents the great achievement of Buddhist art from the 4th to the 14th century. The Mogao Grottoes are home to a vast collection of Buddhist artworks -- more than 2,400 colored sculptures and 45,000 square meters of murals are located in 735 caves.

In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were listed by the UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site.
