(ECNS) -- Zhang Ailing (in Pinyin), 58, head of the Department of International Economics and Trade at Beijing Language and Culture University, died after being struck by a falling tree at Tsinghua University on June 15, the victim’s university confirmed on Friday.

A distinguished scholar in the field of international trade and investment, Zhang held a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of International Business and Economics and served as a professor at BLCU’s School of Business, where she dedicated her career to teaching and research.
According to her students and online photos, Zhang was reportedly visiting her daughter on campus when a tree fell and struck her. She died shortly after from her injuries.
Students described Zhang on Chinese social media Weibo as a kind and gentle teacher, posting tributes and photos in remembrance.
Tsinghua University has not publicly commented on the incident.
