World's first FPSO vessel equipped with carbon capture and storage completed in Shanghai

(ECNS) -- The world’s first offshore floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has been completed in Shanghai. It is scheduled for delivery by the end of this month.

The vessel measures 333 meters in length and 60 meters in width, with a daily crude oil production capacity of up to 120,000 barrels.

It can capture carbon dioxide generated during both navigation and production, while also utilizing waste gas heat for power generation, advancing both environmental protection and energy-efficiency.

This technological breakthrough represents a significant step forward for China in offshore carbon capture.

Offshore oil and gas operations release a large amount of carbon dioxide each year. In 2023 alone, global offshore oil and gas production and processing emitted approximately 38 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

CCS technology offers a promising solution for reducing emissions in these operations, supporting global efforts to peak carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.
