(ECNS) - The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2023 is underway in Shanghai from July 7 to 9, focusing on large models and generative artificial intelligence (AI) under the theme "Intelligent Connectivity Generating Future."

Spanning 50,000 square meters, the WAIC serves as a platform to showcase the technological achievements of renowned companies specializing in large models and generative AI.

One fascinating demonstration involves mesmerizing robot renditions of the Thousand-hand Bodhisattva Dance, an iconic performance that gained widespread acclaim following its debut at the 2005 Spring Gala. These robots flawlessly executed the intricate dance with precise coordination and control, guided by simple input code.

Harnessing the AIGC technology, participants could generate highly creative musical compositions by simply inputting videos, pictures, texts, labels and humming to the generative model.

Similarly, producing AI paintings only requires a few keywords and style selections. It is worth noting that the large models are trained exclusively on Chinese corpus.

In the realm of education, an impressive virtual spoken English “trainer,” featuring expressive facial movements, native-like accents, and personalized constructive feedback, was unveiled to provide an immersive one-on-one spoken English learning experience.

China’s pioneering research and development in large model has yielded groundbreaking advancements, particularly in weather forecasting. Surpassing traditional numerical methods, China’s AI prediction models have achieved unrivaled precision in delivering global weekly weather forecasts within a matter of seconds.

AI-powered large models are also expediting the development process of large aircraft by simulating three-dimensional supercritical wing fluid dynamics.

Furthermore, AI plays a significant role in providing simultaneous interpretation voice broadcast services during the Conference’s opening ceremony. By combining interactive translation with AI large models, an immersive and seamless multilingual experience is created.

Beside these advancements and achievements, the WAIC 2023 also serves as a launchpad for significant initiatives, including the Large Model Corpus Alliance, evaluation platforms, testing standards, and the release of the AIGC (Generative Artificial Intelligence) white paper.

The event has attracted over 1,400 distinguished guests from around the globe, including four Turing Award laureates and one Nobel Prize winner. Top scholars, entrepreneurs, and government officials have come together to engage in insightful discussions, empowering the future of artificial intelligence.

During the opening ceremony, Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, emphasized the widening computational disparity between machines and biology and its profound impact on future human civilization.

Yang Likun, a Turing Award laureate and Chief Scientist of Meta AI Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR), shared innovative approaches to address the ethical and governance challenges associated with AI in the future. Yang further highlighted that open-source represents the only pathway to ensure the safety, benevolence, and practicality of artificial intelligence platforms.

Since its inception in 2018, the WAIC has been successfully held for five consecutive years and has gradually developed into an influential platform in global AI industry.
