(ECNS) -- China has prohibited the import of food from ten prefectures, including Fukushima, in Japan, according to the general administration of customs on Friday.
Strict scrutiny and enhanced supervision will be applied to food, particularly aquatic products (including edible animals), originating from other regions of Japan. This involves rigorous examination of accompanying documentation and 100 percent inspection measures, according to a spokesperson of the customs administration.
These measures aim to prevent the import of Japanese food contaminated by radioactive substances and ensure the safety of imported food for Chinese consumers, the spokesperson said.
Chinese customs has taken note of the recent assessment report released by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding Japan's plan to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean. This report, however, has failed to fully reflect the opinions of all experts involved in the assessment process, and the conclusions drawn have not been unanimously endorsed by all experts, the spokesperson said.
There are still many problems concerning the legitimacy of Japan's ocean discharge plan, the reliability of purification devices, and adequacy of the monitoring program, the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson said Chinese customs will remain highly vigilant and adhere to the principle of absolute responsibility toward domestic consumers. It will take all necessary measures in a timely manner, based on the development of the situation, to ensure the safety of Chinese consumers at their dining tables.
