Liu Yunshan, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with Ukraine's First Vice Prime Minister Serhiy Arbuzov on Wednesday, pledging to further cement the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Arbuzov is in Beijing to attend the second meeting of the China-Ukraine Inter-government Cooperation Committee. He and Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai co-chaired the meeting on Tuesday. The committee's first meeting was held in Ukraine in April 2011.

Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2011 between the two countries has led the China-Ukraine relationship into a new phase.

Recalling his official visit to Ukraine earlier this month, Liu said there is immense potential for cooperation between the two countries. China stands ready to enhance strategic partnership with Ukraine and further advance the strategic partnership.

Liu said he looks forward to a bigger role for the inter-government cooperation committee to expand bilateral practical cooperation in trade, technology, agriculture, tourism and other sectors.

He also proposed the two sides boost their cooperation in education, culture and mass media to deepen the friendship between the two nations in a sustained way.

Hailing the achievements of as well as the prospects for cooperation, Arbuzov said the Ukrainian side attaches great importance to ties with China and will step up strategic cooperation with the Asian country.
