World looks forward to fruitful Sino-US ties

Barack Obama's public presidential inauguration ceremony on Monday marked the start of another four-year journey loaded with heavy and important tasks, and among them is growing relations with China.

The stakes are very high, for the U.S.-China relationship is far more complicated and multi-faceted than an ordinary bilateral one and it would have tremendous impact on the well-being of not only the two nations but also the world at large.

Generally, during Obama's first presidential term, the ties between the world's two largest economies had yielded positive results despite many challenges, as both sides have been trying hard to mange their differences and promote the cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.

For the sake of the future of the two countries and the world, China has proposed an "a new type of relations" characterized by win-win cooperation, mutual trust and favorable interactions.

Washington also sent positive signals when Obama said in his inaugural speech that "we will show the courage to try and resolve our differences with other nations peacefully ... because engagement can more durably lift suspicion and fear."

If the president really lives his words, he would agree that for the sake of the world's peace and prosperity, it is important for the United States and China to foster mutual trust, for trust is the cornerstone for every relationship, no matter between people or between nations.

The words also show that he agrees that the two nations should properly solve their disputes, either economic or political.

Therefore, instead of competing with each other in every place involving both American and Chinese interests, the two powers should step up coordination and expand areas of cooperation through such ways as boosting high-level contacts and people-to-people exchanges.

At last but not least, the two countries also need to strengthen communication and cooperation on crucial global issues, including clime change, tension on the Korean Peninsula, the nuclear program of Iran and unrests in Africa and the Middle East regions.

Cooperation between major powers would help solve these crises, while rivalry only complicate the situation, harming every human being involved.

Both Beijing and Washington have realized the importance of Sino-U.S. ties. The world has witnessed China's sincerity in developing the most important bilateral relationship in the world and it would also expect Obama to do the same.
