Wang Qishan: rise of a troubleshooter

"He can do it" was many observers' comment when Wang Qishan took up a challenging new mission last month to lead the country's top discipline watchdog amid rising calls for crackdown on corruption.

Little more than a month into his new role, Wang has demonstrated the same style that previously won his fame as a troubleshooter in the economic field: tough, resolute and confident in the face of difficulties. Wang's star rose with the fall of the country's inflation. His prowess as a problem solver, however, goes beyond the financial community. In the fight against corruption, Wang Qishan said the goal can not be attained at one stroke.

Concrete efforts and more powerful blows must be delivered. Once at a symposium, Wang asked his guests to forget empty formulae but get straight to the points. He also encouraged them to forget their prepared speeches and show their insights.

Wang told them to feel free to express what they wanted to say. Wang Qishan said the "ethics of the Party will determine its survival or demise."
