China's foreign minister Yang Jiechi has arrived at the United Nations headquarters in New York ahead of its annual General Assembly gathering.
Yang met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, focusing their meeting on the current crisis in Syria and the need for the international community to help resolve the situation. China has repeatedly said it opposes forceful foreign intervention and called for a political solution in Syria.
The 67th session will shine a spotlight on Syria and other issues including insurgencies in Mali and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ban and Yang Jiechi also acknowledged the progress in negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan, but emphasized the need to address the crisis in the Sahel, where militant groups threaten the region. World leaders will address the 193-nation assembly from September 25th to October 1st.
