Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr on Tuesday to discuss the promotion of bilateral ties.

Li hailed the achievements made in bilateral relations over the 40 years since their establishment, citing close exchanges and fruitful cooperation in trade, education, technology and culture.

China has become Australia's largest trading partner, he said, adding that both sides have maintained sound coordination in regional and international affairs.

The vice premier called on both sides to strengthen political trust, respect each other's core interests and major concerns and properly handle differences and sensitive issues.

He also encouraged both countries to enhance non-governmental exchanges, cement cooperation and offer a fair and convenient environment for investment.

Carr said China's development benefits Australia and the world at large. He reiterated his country's commitment to developing ties with China, adding that Australia will facilitate cooperation with China in multiple areas and inject new vitality into bilateral ties.

Carr arrived in Beijing last Friday for a six-day official visit as the guest of Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.
