Pan Sijie works at a mass grave of Chinese laborers forced by Japanese troops to build a hydropower station during World War II in Jilin city, Northeast China’s Jilin province. Pan, 25, has spent numerous hours sorting the remains of forced Chinese laborers. To date, 35 intact human bones and thousands of damaged bones, 38 relics, and 400 historical photos have been found at the site. It is estimated that Japan forced 110,000 Chinese laborers to work for the project and tens of thousands of them died and were buried in mass graves. (Photo: China News Service/Cang Yan)
