Typhoon Haikui hits China, leaves widespread destruction

Typhoon Haikui swept through southeast China on Tuesday, unleashing heavy rain and violent gusts of wind that whipped power lines, damaged roads, caused mudslides and uprooted trees. 　

Typhoon Haikui, the 11th typhoon of this year, landed in the coastal area of Dongshan County of southeast China's Fujian Province at around 5:20 a.m., bringing gales of up to 20 meters per second near its center, the Fujian provincial meteorological observatory said. 　

Fuzhou city of Fujian Province was hit by heavy rainfall due to Haikui. The 24-hour rainfall in Fuzhou's Yongtai County exceeded 262 millimeters, breaking local historical records since 1960. Reporter of China News Service visited the county on Tuesday.　 　 Rescue teams worked around the clock in typhoon-affected areas.
