Number of giant pandas in Chengdu breeding base increased 12-fold over past 30 years

The number of giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has increased 12-fold over the past 30 years from 18 in 1994 to 237 today, Hou Rong, a National People's Congress (NPC) deputy and deputy director of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, said at an interview on Sunday.

She noted that breeding giant pandas aims to return them to the wild. To achieve this goal, more efforts should be made to protect their natural habitat.

On October 12, 2021, China established the first batch of national parks including the Giant Panda National Park, marking a new phase of nature conservation in the country.
