(ECNS) -- Tibetans celebrated the Serfs' Emancipation Day at the square in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Monday.
On March 28, 1959, the Communist Party of China led the people in Tibet to abolish Tibet's feudal serfdom under theocracy.
The democratic reform liberated one million serfs in Tibet, marking a historic leap in the social system.
In 2009, March 28 was announced as a day to commemorate the emancipation of the serfs.
