(ECNS) -- In an interview with China News Service, Justin Yifu Lin, member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and dean of Institute of New Structural Economics of Peking University, said China is just one step shy of high-income country status.
"The threshold for high-income countries was $12,535 GNI per-capita. The World Bank has raised it to $12,695. China's GDP per capita last year was $12,551, just one step away from the threshold. So I believe to pass the 'middle income trap', it would only take us one or two years. I'm sure we can realize this goal by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan," he said.
The population of China accounts for more than 18 percent of that of the world, so if China can cross the trap, it would be an important milestone in human history, he added.
