(ECNS) -- There is no air or water on the Moon, so it is probably unrealistic to grow vegetables and grains under existing conditions, said Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's lunar exploration project on Tuesday.

Next, we may explore the South Pole of the Moon to see if there is water or not, which is a very important scientific goal for China, said Wu, who is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

According to scientific reckoning, there may be water ice at the South Pole. There should be water from when the Moon initially formed, Wu said.

The Moon has deep craters at either the North or South Pole, which the sunlight could not reach, meaning water may exist inside in the form of ice. It would be great if we could find water ice, he added.

At present, there is no way to grow vegetables in the natural environment of the Moon, but it is possible to grow vegetables and food in the future by artificial cultivation in the lunar scientific research station.
