China confirmed the death of a Chinese hostage held by the Islamic State (IS) on Thursday.
Fan Jinghui, 50, a freelance consultant from Beijing, was kidnapped with a Norwegian in September and held "for sale".
Chinese President Xi Jinping has condemned the killing, saying "terrorism is the common enemy of human beings."
Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang said China will strengthen protection of its citizens and institutions overseas.
