Through intelligent upgrades and digital applications, flood defense and disaster resilience capabilities of Jiyuan, Henan province, have significantly improved, ensuring a highly reliable power supply.
Facing heavy rain season, the city has recently integrated the renovation of "smart digital substations" into its smart grid development.
Over nearly a month, a pilot project of smart digital substation in the Yuchuan Lyucheng residential area has been completed. One of the upgrading focuses was on waterproofing the exterior of the distribution rooms and installing high-waterproof-sealed doors. These doors can withstand severe weather conditions and external flooding, ensuring no internal leakage for 36 hours and no standing water for seven days, thus maintaining uninterrupted power supply, said State Grid Jiyuan Power Supply Co, the project's developer.
A smart integrated terminal also enables remote automatic control of internal equipment such as fans, air conditioners and water pumps. Should uncontrollable factors lead to water ingress, water level sensors can trigger a high water level alarm. The intelligent inspection system assesses the situation and automatically activates the drainage pumps, ensuring continuous power supply even in adverse weather conditions.
The substation is also equipped with intelligent inspection robots that closely monitor equipment operation. Even if maintenance personnel are unable to enter the substation due to flooding or other special circumstances, the robots provide clear insights into all conditions, enabling immediate assessment and decision-making. Instructions can then be issued to adjust equipment operation through the main distribution automation station.
"Intelligent equipment control, smart status inspections, and multi-layered risk protection ensure high power supply reliability, effectively providing a 'smart insurance' for our customers," said Li Peidong, a State Grid Jiyuan Power Supply Co technician.
