China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Monday upgraded its emergency response for flood and typhoon control from Level IV to Level III, as Typhoon Haishen-triggered downpours are expected in vast stretches of northeast China over the next two days.
The typhoon, the 10th this year, is likely to enter Jilin Province early Tuesday and advance into Heilongjiang Province Tuesday evening, bringing torrential rainfall to parts of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM).
Affected by typhoons since late August, northeast China has seen floods in rivers like the Songhuajiang River and the Nenjiang River, as well as in some of their tributaries.
The MEM called for sharpened attention toward typhoon prevention and control as disaster-prone areas produced by the eighth through the 10th typhoons largely overlapped.
