Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that China has always firmly opposed certain countries forming small cliques, interfering in China's internal affairs, attacking and smearing China, and inciting confrontation and division. "We have lodged serious representations with the relevant countries," Guo said.
These remarks were made in response to a question concerning the joint statement on trilateral U.S.-Japan-South Korea meeting in Munich, in which the three sides for the first time "expressed support for Taiwan's meaningful participation in appropriate international organizations," and "emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits as an indispensable element of security and prosperity for the international community."
Guo said that the participation of the Taiwan region in the activities of international organizations must and can only be handled in accordance with the one-China principle. "I would like to emphasize that the Asia-Pacific region is a high ground for peace and development, not a chessboard for great power rivalry," he added. We urge relevant parties to truly respect the efforts of regional countries in maintaining peace and stability, to abandon Cold War mentality, and to stop creating bloc confrontation and exacerbating regional tensions, Guo said.
