The U.S. Senate passed the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act on Tuesday despite strong opposition from the Chinese government.
Following the voice vote by senators, the act now goes to the House of Representatives, which earlier approved its own version of the measure.
China has repeatedly urged the U.S. side to earnestly respect China's sovereignty and stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and interfering in China's internal affairs.
Last week, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council made serious protest to and strongly condemned the passing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 by the U.S. House of Representatives.
