Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's (SAR) chief executive Carrie Lam on Friday condemned “Hong Kong independence” as a violation of “One Country, Two Systems” principle and Hong Kong’s Basic Law, adding that freedom in speech does not mean speech without limits.
Lam’s remarks came after recent posters advocating Hong Kong independence appeared in the Chinese University of Hong Kong this week.
“I condemn the continued appearance of such remarks on university campuses, which is in violation of our country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and development interests,” she said.
Lam said she was also shocked with a poster at Hong Kong’s Education University congratulating a senior education official on the death of her son, and denounced it as “extremely callous and insulting.”
The poster comprising 12 sheets of A4 paper was put up hours after Poon Hong-yan, son of deputy education minister Christine Choi Yuk-lin, jumped to his death on Thursday from the 41st floor of a residential complex, according to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.
Lam said she felt deeply regretful and strongly condemned such move, adding that she has contacted the university to express her concerns over the matter.
