"We hope that all parties will do things conducive to the stable development of Venezuela, and do things that are conducive to the maintenance of the basic norms of international law and international relations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference on Monday.
He made the remarks in response to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's accusation in a Sunday meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Venezuela that China and Russia blocked the Security Council from adopting a presidential statement.
China maintains that all countries should abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, such as no interference in each other's internal affairs, Geng said.
Speaking at the Security Council emergency meeting, Ma Zhaoxu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, stressed that China is against adding the situation in Venezuela to the agenda of the Security Council.
