(ECNS) -- Concerning the hefty tariffs initiated by the Trump administration, a Chinese expert believes they would not endanger the overall situation of China's economic development, adding that it is fully prepared for such a situation.
As early as 2020, the Chinese government adopted a new development pattern of "dual circulation," in which China's domestic market remains the mainstay with domestic and international equivalents reinforcing each other.
In 2023, China proposed to develop new quality productive forces, integrate scientific and technological innovation resources, and lead the development of strategic emerging and future industries. Then, in the 2025 government work report, China emphasized its commitment to developing a unified national market.
Its macroeconomic policy toolbox has reserved enough policy options to deal with today's hefty tariffs, said Gao Jian, director of the Center for British Studies under Shanghai International Studies University.
Gao noted that China has a highly stable political system, the most complete industrial chain in the world, abundant scientific and technical talent, and a huge and growing market. These factors are enough to ensure its predominant position in economic development.
Further, Chinese culture features strong cohesion and adaptability. Gao said that the tariff war is essentially a contest of national will and spirit, and a comprehensive test of a country's social cohesion and governance capability. In this sense, "the Chinese government remains confident."
