(ECNS) – A market supervision administration in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, announced on Wednesday that it has launched an investigation into a local hospital suspected of illegally adding diazepam—a controlled sedative—to its "herbal liquid" products marketed for insomnia treatment.
The probe was followed by media reports alleging that a patient surnamed Liu experienced unusual drowsiness shortly after consuming the herbal mixture, which had been purchased online from Hebei Puzhe Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital.
Independent laboratory tests commissioned by the patient confirmed the presence of diazepam, a controlled substance listed under China’s Regulations on the Administration of Psychotropic Substances (2013), which mandates strict oversight due to its addiction risks.
