(ECNS) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is accelerating the approval of a pilot program for drone-powered food delivery by Keeta, a takeout brand under Mmeituan, as a part of efforts to develop its low-altitude economy, local media reported Sunday.
The city's Transport and Logistics Bureau announced on social media Saturday that officials had met with Sha Tin District Council representatives to discuss the "regulatory sandbox" initiative and progress of related projects.
The low-altitude economy has recently gained momentum in Hong Kong. At the recently concluded InnoEX 2025, the sector became a major focus, with numerous drone and air mobility companies showcasing their latest innovations.
The HKSAR government recently launched its low-altitude economy "regulatory sandbox" and announced the first batch of pilot projects. These initiatives cover fields including emergency response, logistics delivery, maintenance, and safety inspections, with trials gradually starting in April.
The low-altitude economy is a strategic, emerging industry for the nation and a prime example of new quality productive force, said Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu during InnoEX 2025.
He noted that Hong Kong is striving to become an international innovation and technology hub as well as a gathering place for top global talent. The HKSAR government will actively bridge scientific research achievements with corporate capabilities to unlock development potential, Lee said.
