(ECNS) -- China does not want to fight a trade war with the U.S., but it is by no means afraid if the U.S. insists on provoking, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday in response to a question about the new tariff policy published by the U.S.
The spokesperson made the remarks after the White House announced that China now faces up to a 245% tariff on products to the U.S. as a result of its retaliatory actions.
China has repeatedly stated its solemn position on the tariff issue, spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily news briefing.
He pointed out that the U.S. initiated the tariff war while China has taken necessary countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights, interests, and international fairness and justice, which is completely reasonable and legal.
"There are no winners in tariff and trade wars," he noted.
