(ECNS) -- Shanghai has become China's first megacity to achieve full 5G coverage across its entire metro system, officials announced Tuesday, marking a major step in upgrading urban transit connectivity and smart operations.
The project spans 21 lines, including the Maglev and airport rail link, covering 896 kilometers and 517 stations.
Shanghai Metro operator Shentong Metro Group revealed that 80 percent of its lines have been upgraded to 5G-Advanced (5G-A), delivering an average downlink user-perceived rate exceeding 600 Mbps in stations and tunnels, with peak rates surpassing 1 Gbps.
5G deployment enables real-time monitoring of train operations and critical components, shifting maintenance from reactive to predictive models. High-speed data transmission now allows instant analysis of pantograph-catenary images and videos, triggering alerts for potential faults, according to its operator.
For example, if anomalies are detected in the pantograph system, maintenance teams can intervene preemptively to reduce breakdown risks.
In addition, utilizing 5G's large bandwidth and positioning capability, the system can provide remote scheduling and supervision for on-site operations like construction management and emergency rescue.
Some vehicle bases put into use 5G inspection robots, which utilize the high-speed channel provided by 5G to realize remote inspection and fault identification of high-definition images and videos of important under-vehicle parts captured, replacing more than 80 percent of under-vehicle manual inspections, with an accuracy of about 98 percent.
In emergencies, staff members can guide drivers to clear problems via ultra-clear audio and video links.
