(ECNS) -- In an effort to help his wife overcome depression, a Hunan couple embarked on an extraordinary journey — walking nearly 5,000 kilometers from Hunan to Xizang Autonomous Region and back.

Through the hardships and challenges of this journey, they not only witnessed the beauty of China's vast landscapes but also discovered the "secret to happiness."

Born in October 1976 in Jiale Village, Xinshao County, Hunan Province, Yang Tongniu is a thin man with graying hair, a scruffy beard, and sun-darkened skin. His wife, Tang Jiankai, is from the same village and one year younger.

"I took her on this hike to overcome depression and experience the beauty of our country," said her husband.

On March 3, 2024, Yang put into action the travel plans he had meticulously researched online, setting out for Xizang from Xinshao — a journey of over 3,000 kilometers.

They chose to walk along National Highway 318 because "there are many rest stops and villages along the way, making it easier to replenish supplies."

During an interview with Red Star News, a news outlet in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Yang detailed his preparations: "I bought two stoves — one gas and the other wood-burning. I also got a windproof, waterproof, and cold-resistant tent, an inflatable moisture-proof mat, as well as essentials like noodles and Lao Gan Ma chili sauce.”

On Jan. 13, 2025, after nearly 10 months of walking and covering a 6,000-kilometer round trip (with more than 5,000 kilometers walked), Yang and his wife returned home to Xinshao County.

"Although this journey was exhausting and filled with hardships, it made me feel the warmth and kindness of people," Yang explained.

What makes him happier is after nearly a year of walking, his wife improved a lot, he said. He recorded their journey in his short video and released it online.

The entire journey cost over 80,000 yuan ($11,000), with 58,000 yuan coming from his own savings and the rest from online tips and advertising revenue.

However, it was met with skepticism. Some accused him of driving instead of walking, while others speculated that he had fabricated his wife’s illness to gain sympathy, attract followers, and receive online donations.

At first, Yang was angry about these unfounded accusations. Later, he came to terms with it: "Anyone who achieves something will inevitably face criticism and scrutiny," he said.

Reflecting on the journey, Yang said his greatest takeaway was discovering the essence of happiness.

“Xizang is breathtaking. What struck me most was its serenity — people there are peaceful, kind, and live without conflict or anger. They are truly happy."

"Happiness has nothing to do with how much money you have," Yang concluded. "Being alive is the greatest happiness of all."
