(ECNS) -- China firmly opposes the United States' new artificial intelligence (AI) export rules and will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said on Monday.
The spokesperson made the remarks in response to a media inquiry, emphasizing that the U.S. move exemplifies the generalization of the concept of national security and a misuse of export controls, blatantly violating international multilateral trade rules.
The Biden administration released the new export controls on Monday, imposing restrictions on advanced AI chips, cloud access, and model weights. These measures will create obstacles and interfere with third parties engaged in normal trade with China, the spokesperson added.
Despite concerns and dissatisfaction from U.S. high-tech companies and industry organizations, the Biden administration has insisted on the hasty implementation of these measures.
This has significantly disrupted normal international trade, undermined market rules and the global economic order, and hindered global technological innovation. Besides, it has harmed the interests of businesses worldwide, including those in the U.S. itself.
