(ECNS) -- The Baihetan hydropower station operated all 16 of its generators for the first time on Thursday, with a maximum total output of 12.08 million kilowatts, hitting a new record.
To date, the cumulative power generation of the Baihetan Hydropower Station has exceeded 78 billion kilowatt-hours.
The station straddles the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan in Southwest China and is located on the Jinsha River in the upper section of the Yangtze River. It is a mega project in China's west-east power transmission program, which aims to transmit electricity from the resource-rich western part of the country to energy-hungry regions in eastern regions.
With a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, the hydropower station is equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of 1 million kilowatts, the largest single-unit capacity in the world.
The first batch of units started generating power on June 28, 2021, and the station entered full operation on December 20, 2022.
