(ECNS) -- The Fujian High People's Court is upholding its original verdict and sentenced a matricidal murderer to the death penalty over intentional homicide, fraud, and buying of identity cards.
Wu Xieyu, a former student from a top Chinese university, allegedly killed his mother Xie Tianqin in 2015 and then kept her rotting corpse from being discovered as he evaded the police with a stack of ID cards.
Xie was found dead on Feb 14, 2016, in her apartment in the faculty dormitory of a middle school in Fuzhou, Fujian Province.
She was believed to be murdered by her son after they had a confrontation on July 11, 2015, according to police sources.
Wu allegedly sealed off the room after the murder, wrapped the corpse with layers of plastic cloth, and put activated carbon in between them to absorb the smell.
He was arrested in April 2019 at an airport in Chongqing municipality with the assistance of facial recognition technology.
When the former Peking University student from Fujian province was detained, he was carrying more than 30 ID cards that he had purchased online.
The Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court of Fujian Province sentenced Wu to the death penalty on August 26, 2021, depriving him of his political rights and fining him 103,000 yuan (about $14,000).
In September 2021, Wu filed an appeal with the court. The case was "suspended" due to "irresistible reasons" during the trial of the second instance on March 21, 2022.
