(ECNS) – Affected by surging COVID-19 cases, Beijing is seeing fewer couriers at work, which has led to mounting undelivered parcels in recent days after the "Double 12" shopping festival.
China's logistics companies have accordingly dispatched thousands of couriers from the rest of the country to help with parcel deliveries in Beijing.
Major logistics companies, including Cainiao, JD.com, and SF Express, have employed additional couriers from a dozen provincial-level regions including Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Heilongjiang to help with parcel deliveries in Beijing, with medicine, masks, and other medical and living necessities a priority. In addition, government incentives were given to Beijing residents for assisting couriers.
A courier at a parcel delivery site in Tongzhou district said the average daily arrival order volume was 4,500 to 5,000, but that the number had jumped to 8,000 to 10,000. This means without extra assistance, the entire workload would have been doubled.
Meanwhile, Chinese delivery giant Meituan is also recruiting more couriers. On Friday, Beijing advocated citizens to join the takeaway team. The latest data from Meituan shows that the number of new couriers from Dec. 15 to 16 increased by 215 percent from the same period last week.
With the increase of newcomers, and the recovery of sick couriers, overall capacity on the Meituan platform has gradually recovered to more than 80 percent.
