International media warn against Pelosi's possible Taiwan visit

(ECNS) -- International media have warned against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plan to visit Taiwan after a report alleged that she would arrive there Tuesday evening.

"Realism requires acknowledging that, as Mr. Biden's admittedly unfortunate remark implied, the short term is especially inopportune for Ms. Pelosi to visit Taiwan,” said The Washington Post on Saturday in an opinion piece.

Pelosi's plans for the trip should be discreet, the post added.

"Pelosi's Taiwan visit will inflame the U.S.-China crisis," said the Financial Times. Her planned trip could provoke a military response from the People’s Liberation Army, it was added.

Pelosi's arrival is likely to inflame relations between the U.S. and China without making Taiwan safer, said the Guardian.

China on Monday once again made it clear to the U.S. side that the Chinese side is fully prepared for any eventuality and that the People's Liberation Army of China will not sit idly by if Pelosi visits Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the warning at a daily news briefing.

Pelosi is the third highest-ranking official in the U.S. government, which means it would be highly sensitive for her to visit Taiwan.

Whatever the timing or way she chooses to go to Taiwan, it will seriously violate the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués and undermine China-U.S. relations, Zhao said.

"A visit to Taiwan by her would constitute a gross interference in China's internal affairs, seriously undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, wantonly trample on the one-China principle, greatly threaten peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, severely undermine China-U.S. relations, and lead to a very serious situation and grave consequences," said Zhao.

The United States should strictly abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three China-U.S. joint communiques, honor U.S. President Joe Biden's commitment that the United States does not support "Taiwan independence," and not arrange for Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the spokesperson added.
