(ECNS) -- Over 30 rock paintings featuring horse and deer patterns were discovered deep inside Helan Mountains in Shizuishan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The discovery came after a first site was located in nearby Gangou in the mountains.
The location has an average elevation of 1,200 meters, showing a trend from northeast to southwest, looking very steep. The rock paintings spread across nearly 80 meters over and irregular and ragged surface.
Among the most recognizable of the over 30 newly discovered rock paintings are patterns of horses and deer. The largest group of horses is about 2.4 meters long and 0.7 meter wide, and the smallest, about 11 centimeters long and 7.11 centimeters wide.
The horses tend to be plump, looking very realistic. In addition, grinding and chiseling are believed to have been used along with diversified techniques of depiction.
It can be inferred from these rock paintings that Helan Mountains in ancient times had a unique natural environment with lush vegetation and animal clusters.
The discovery further confirms that ancient Ningxia is an area where the cultures of farming people in the central plains and nomadic people in northern China collide, exchange and blend, and provides strong evidence for studying the primitive life style of ancient humans.
