(ECNS) -- A photo exhibition showcasing China's achievements in poverty alleviation opened in Bangkok, capital of Thailand, on Monday during the 78th U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Annual Meeting.
The exhibition was held by the permanent mission of China to ESCAP at the United Nations Conference Center Bangkok to commemorate the 75th anniversary of ESCAP.
Han Zhiqiang, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, and Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of ESCAP, jointly unveiled the photo exhibition.
Han said China has lifted 770 million people out of poverty over the past 40 years, accounting for more than 70 percent of the world's poverty-stricken population over the same period. Since 2012, nearly 100 million rural poor people have been lifted out of poverty, and the poverty reduction goal of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has been achieved 10 years ahead of schedule in China.
At the same time, China has assisted more than 160 developing countries through South-South cooperation to support their poverty reduction efforts, he added.
Alisjahbana appreciated China's achievements in poverty reduction, saying China has provided important lessons and experience in poverty alleviation for developing countries and made a great contribution to regional economic and social development through South-South cooperation.
