(ECNS) -- Two-time Olympic champion Hanyu Yuzuru tried to push the envelope although he failed the planned 4A challenge in the men's single skating event of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing on Thursday.
"4A" or "Quad Axel" -- the Axel Paulsen jump named after its creator, is regarded as the most difficult challenge in terms of six criteria in figure skating.
An extra half-revolution to ensure the skater lands backward while jumping up and facing forward at the same time, proposing specific requirement besides a quad Axel rotation, is the most difficult part.
"No matter how hard, no matter how unimaginable, I want to push a little bit more for those who have expectations for me," Yuzuru said in an interview.
Despite the failure, the Japanese skater remains highly popular. Chinese figure skater Jin Boyang voiced his empathy for Hanyu's imperfect yet venturous challenge, saying Hanyu's brave and consistent self-challenging spirit is encouraging and would inspire more.
