(ECNS) - China will improve efforts to attract 45,000 university graduates to teach in rural areas this year amid initiatives designed to boost education standards in poverty-stricken areas, said the Ministry of Education.
At a press conference on Friday, the ministry said it would increase the training of rural teachers using public funding.
The ‘Special Post’ program will recruit 90,000 teachers, an increase of 10,000 over last year, to relieve the shortage in poor rural areas.
Under the “Silver Age Lecture Plan”, some 1,800 retired or retiring educators will also be sent to teach in countryside schools, with the number set to rise to 10,000 in 2020. Another initiative will organize training of one million headmasters for schools in relatively underdeveloped western and central regions this year.
