The U.S. government will end its distribution of free COVID-19 testing kits to Americans on Friday due to lack of funding, U.S. media reported, citing senior Biden administration officials.
"Ordering through this program will be suspended on Friday, September 2, because Congress hasn't provided additional funding to replenish the nation's stockpile of tests," said an alert on the ordering website for the testing kits, covidtests.gov.
The program is still accepting orders until Sept. 2.
The U.S. government started shipping the free tests in January, when the Omicron variant was peaking.
The federal government has distributed an estimated 600 million tests through its COVID-19 test website, according to a CNBC report.
