Canadian national Michael Kovrig stood trial on Monday for suspected spying on state secrets and intelligence for overseas interests at the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.
A closed hearing was held as the case involves state secrets, the court said. It added that Michael Kovrig and his defense counsel were present at the trial.
The court said a verdict would be announced according to the law at a later date.
