India's COVID-19 tally reached 9,703,770 on Tuesday as 26,567 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the health ministry.

According to the data, the death toll mounted to 140,958 as 385 COVID-19 patients died since Monday morning.

According to the health ministry, India crossed a significant milestone on Monday as the active caseload fell below 400,000-mark after 140 days, and the daily fatalities fell below 400 after 157 days.

"India's COVID-19 cases and fatalities per million population are among the lowest in the world," it added.

Delhi has been one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country. As many as 1,674 new cases and 63 deaths were registered in the national capital during the past 24 hours.

There are still 383,866 active cases in the country, while 9,178,946 people have been discharged from hospitals after medical treatment, added the ministry's latest data.

Meanwhile, the federal government has ramped up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country. Till Sunday a total of 147,787,656 tests have been conducted, out of which 801,081 tests were conducted on Sunday alone, said the figures released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday.

Due to the continued spell of the pandemic, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has decided to continue the suspension of international flights till the year-end.

Last Friday Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a COVID-19 vaccine could be ready in a few weeks and that efforts were being made towards developing a perfect network for its distribution across the country once the vaccine was ready.

Modi earlier chaired a high-level meeting with chief ministers of all states via video-conferencing, to review the status and preparedness of COVID-19 response and management, with a special emphasis on eight high-focus states, including Haryana, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Bengal.
