New technologies are being used to improve passengers' travel experience during the Spring Festival rush or chunyun, Economic Information Daily reported on Monday.

To improve efficiency, facial recognition technology will be used to verify passengers' identification, said Li Wenxin, deputy general manager of China Railway Corp.

An optimized ticket purchase process can also boost travelers' chances of buying a railway ticket, Li added.

With new functions on updated website of 12306.cn, China's official online train ticket booking system, canceled train tickets will be automatically allocated to other passengers who have paid in advance when tickets are fully booked, CCTV reported.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China is promoting "paperless travel" and passengers can use electronic boarding pass and check-in via self-service in about 229 airports and enjoy the whole boarding process paperless in 32 airports.

Meanwhile, passengers can apply for temporary electronic ID card online via mobiles in Beijing, Shenzhen and Jilin as a pilot measure to bring convenience to passengers.

In addition, tracing and monitoring technologies will also be used to ensure the safety of passengers' luggage and protect their property.

China is expected to witness 2.99 billion passenger trips during this year's Spring Festival travel period, starting from Jan 21 to March 1.

The figure is expected to rise 0.6 percent compared with the travel rush last year, with an 8.3 percent increase in railway trips and 12 percent rise in air travel.

To deal with the traffic pressure, a total of 4,787 and 4,860 two-way train services will be scheduled daily before and after the festival, respectively, up 5.4 percent and 5.2 percent year-on-year, said Li.

To enhance transportation capacity, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has added 35,000 additional flights and expanded operation from 1 am to 6 am in 10 large airports including Shanghai Pudong International Airport, in the 40-day period, said Dong Zhiyi, deputy head of the CAAC.

The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year of Pig, falls on Feb 5 this year and it is the most important occasion for family reunions.
